    This seminar is designed for innovators who want to maximise the impact of their innovations. With a global outlook and focus on patents, the session will demystify intellectual property (IP) and equip participants with the knowledge needed to identify new innovation and the key considerations for protecting it. 

    This seminar provides a clear, structured overview of the key principles and processes in IP management, and includes theory, practical tips and a case study.

    Run by an IP expert with direct experience in working with Universities, SMEs and global multinationals to protect University-originating innovation.

    What the seminar covers:

    • The importance of IP for university innovators
      Understand how IP protection underpins successful technology transfer, partnerships, and real-world impact.
    • Integrating IP into the product development pathway
      Learn how IP considerations should align with key milestones in developing small molecule drugs, biologics, diagnostics, and medical devices.
    • Patentable subject matter
      Discover what types of invention can be protected by patents, and the key legal criteria for a valid patent.
    • Pre-filing considerations
      Gain insight into identifying inventors, managing confidential data, complying with university IP codes, and navigating local and international filing requirements.
    • The patent drafting and filing process
      Understand the main steps in working with a patent attorney to draft a strong patent application and file an initial patent application.
    • IP system initiatives and their relevance to universities & LMICs
      Explore supportive systems including the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), regional patent systems, the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH), and opportunities for fee reductions.
    • Confidential information, trade secrets, and know-how
      Learn about alternative forms of protection and when they are most appropriate.
    • Case study
      The seminar concludes with a practical case study illustrating IP decision-making in an academic innovation scenario.

    Useful reference materials will be provided to participants who attend this seminar.
