21 May 2025We are proud to share that our very own FAILSAFE Professor Neil Gow from the University of Exeter’s MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) and Professor Nelesh Govender, FAILSAFE awardee co-applicant, are raising the profile of fungal antimicrobial resistance (fAMR)—a challenge that is rapidly gaining importance in global health.
Professor Gow is a world-leading expert in fungal biology and medical mycology, with a distinguished career dedicated to understanding how fungal pathogens cause disease, evade the immune system, and develop resistance to antifungal drugs. His research has direct impact on the design of new antifungal drugs, diagnostics, and immunotherapies, and is crucial for tackling the growing threat of antifungal resistance.
He is featured on the Naked Scientists podcast episode “Rising Tide of Fungal Diseases,” where he discusses why fAMR matters and what we can do about it. This is a vital topic that affects us all—fungal infections kill over 1.6 million people each year, and resistance to current treatments is on the rise.
Please take the time to listen and help spread the word by sharing the link below. Raising awareness is a key step in combating this silent but deadly threat.
