Mycology Bioimaging Initiative – Imagining the Fungal Cell Workshop – Cape Town 2025

Posted by Vanessa Moseley

20 January 2025

Microscopy is the dominant tool for understanding molecules, cells, and complex tissues. Are you a Medical Mycologist in Africa?  Are you interested in exploring how fluorescence microscopy can advance your understanding of fungal pathogens and pathogenesis? If so, this is an exciting opportunity for you to participate in the 2025 ‘Imaging the Fungal Cell’ Workshop in Cape Town this summer!

Workshop Overview

The Mycology Bioimaging Initiative is a collaboration between the University of Cape Town, the University of Exeter MRC CMM, and the University of Edinburgh, funded by the Wellcome Trust. We aim to expand access to advanced bioimaging tools for medical mycologists across Africa, with a focus on fluorescence microscopy.

Whether you’re new to fluorescence microscopy or have experience with it, this workshop offers a fantastic opportunity to enhance your skills, especially in the context of fungal pathogens. The workshop will also include training, peer mentoring, and infrastructure support through our partnership with the African Microscopy Initiative.

When: August 2025

Where: Africa Microscopy Initiative, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Key themes covered:

  • Fundamentals of fluorescence microscopy
  • AMR/Fungal adaption
  • Host-pathogen interactions
  • Single cell pathology
  • Live cell imaging
  • Quantitative image analysis

This workshop will provide:

  • Opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration
  • Insights into fungal growth and their impact on host cells
  • Pathogen tips and tricks
  • Assay-driven hands on demo @ AMI

How to Apply

Unfortunately, applications for this workshop are now closed. If you have submitted an expression of interest, we will contact you by March 31st, 2025, to confirm your acceptance.
