Infectious Diseases Division, Hospital “Dr. Juan A. Fernandez”, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Study setting: Hospital Juan A. Fernandez is one of the largest public hospitals in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is an academic public institution affiliated to the University of Buenos Aires, providing education to medical students, as well as to post-graduate trainees. This hospital with 357 beds is part of the Public Health Network, providing free of charge healthcare for outpatient and inpatient individuals.
The Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Fernandez Hospital has a registered cohort of 19,400 HIV patients and currently provides ART and clinical care to more than 4,000 PLHIV. We currently work together with 3 hospitals in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires and with hospitals in 3 other provinces of Argentina in the implementation to package of sequential POC assays that including rapid diagnosis of HIV infection, determination of the immune status and followed by the rapid screening of opportunistic infections: histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis and TB.
The Infectious Diseases Division and the Microbiology Laboratory work together on the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of systemic mycoses, especially in people living with HIV in advanced stages. The Mycology Department of the National Administration of Laboratories and Health Institutes “Dr. Carlos Malbrán” (ANLIS-Malbrán) provides ongoing technical support to ensure the quality of diagnostic processes.
Furthermore, a biobank for biological samples and strains of fungal microorganisms in the context of people living with advanced HIV is being developed in conjunction with the Institute for Biomedical Research in Retroviruses and AIDS (INBIRS). Our working group collaborate with international research under the leadership of Dr. Juan Luis Rodríguez-Tudela, contributing to the FAILSAFE project’s mission to improve fungal disease management.
